Stupid/Silly Retcon Mistakes

Post by Cristiona »

It's bad enough when the RNG decides to screw you over by making the VIP guest refuse to ever give you a swipe card, but it's even worse when you do it to yourself:

I decided to open the Space Station this run, since I'm doing an all-items run. So I equipped my spear and went flying in the desert. Used free runaways until I got the non-combat and threw the hubcap.

...and then remembered that I can't very well tell Susan about it if I'm level 3 and haven't unlocked her yet.

My huge, current mistake: Maso Psion run... I DO NOT advise this AT ALL.

Nope. Although you can enter, you can't meet steele.

Doing a sugar run.
Forgot that the Gumball Machine isn't asking how many chips you want to put in, but how many gumballs you want. So 3000 chips go poof when I say 600. Dur. Sad thing is, if I had had just ~40 less chips, it would have said "You don't have enough chips for that" and it could have been avoided.

What compounds the mistake is that I won't even use 19 of the 21 eyeball gumballs I got. See, on day 2 I pulled 3 Sacks of Loot, so that'll take care of all my sugar needs for the rest of the run. Although that is kind of ironic, since for a long time I'd wondered why on earth I'd gotten 3 sacks.

Guess I'll just have to pull another gold coin for day 3.

Note to Self: Visiting Rand is required to start the level 7 quest.

Yeah i've wasted adventures waiting for the NC option, and thinking the RNG hated me.

Accidentally started a trainee run, so realising that 1 mettle wasn't enough to perm a skill, I did the space station adventure to earn bonus mettle.

Only on retconning, found out that bonus mettle doesn't count and I wasn't allowed to perm a skill anyway.

I've now probably got the longest trainee run of anyone (13 days, 107h 55m 3s) due to waiting for the space station to open :(

And I forgot to change my computers so lost 2 positronics...

Adventured for DAYS in the oil rig waiting for the Quincy Air Coupon to drop...
before finally realizing it'd probably be quicker to just unlock the base interior 'normally.'

Usually that coupon drops early on. I never got it this time.

This was a close one because I kept using combat items, but it turned from a possible mistake to pure, frigid awesomeness!

Heh, my Elemental was worse than my Psion Maso run by a lot . . .

How does one even DO that?

Check the wiki, but the gist is fly around the desert till you can throw a hubcap. Then do the space station with Susan. When it all finishes then you get a bonus mettle, but takes ages. Theres apparently another bonus mettle for doing something with the nagual mystic.

Oh, no, I know how to get the bonus mettle.

My question was, how do you do an otherwise mettle-free "trainee" run?

Choose class (5)
All items available (-4 -> 1)
all skills (+0 -> 1)
caffeine + sugar (+0 -> 1)
sidekick from the beginning (+0 -> 1)

Your run will be worth 1 mettle, called "Trainee" in your retcon history, and won't let you perm a skill at the end.
You can check full listing of "named" retcon types - there's a short list at the right side when you initiate retcon from your hideout (where you choose the limitations), and at the end of that short list is a link to the full list.

I think her point was more "How could you do that?!" as opposed to, "What is the manner in which someone might do such a thing?"

For extra fun, do it in your best House of the Dead 2 voice: "How could. Anyone DO. Such a thing?!?!!?

I thought a run needed a minimum of 1 mettle to allow you to perm a skill . . .

The night was just beginning and my Hero had used her first turn to pass what she had thought was her physical limit into a whole new level of being. Reinvigorated, she traveled Downtown to see if her contact in the police had any news for her. The tension in the town had been building ever since she took down the Casino a few nights ago, and something told her that everything would come to a head tonight.

But when she walked into the police station her ally Rand was nowhere to be found. She had never interacted with any of the other officers, preferring to be a mysterious crimebuster. But the looks they threw her way were more amused than curious and only then did she realize that she was walking around into this brightly lit building wearing a silk shirt, a medieval skirt and diving gloves.

Embarrassed, she left the Police Station as quick as her heavy shield would allow her. Board and restless, she got on her motorcycle to head back to her hideout. Turning on to her street she sees some suspicious figures going into the pizza shop where that corny teenager hangs out, and oops.

John Steele was still a guy who needed to die before she could even think of finding out where the Mick was hiding.
