"Normal expectations" is "use an item" or "visit firebird college", so that could mean anything. Craft an item, hit a particular encounter, use skills/combat items in a particular sequence, let a sidekick "upgrade" themselves by gaining (hidden) experience in...

It's something that's outside normal expectations for how your understudy learns things. So it might take a while to figure out.
