I'm sorry, but Songs For The Deaf is ten times better than everything else QotSA have ever done. Seriously.

Ah, yeah, that makes sense.

I guess I should list my five, then?

In The Aeroplane Over The Sea - Neutral Milk Hotel
Abbey Road - The Beatles
The Downward Spiral - Nine Inch Nails
The Dark Side of The Moon - Pink Floyd
OK Computer or Kid A - Radiohead

Honorable Mentions -
Moving Pictures - Rush
Songs For The Deaf - Queens of the Stone Age
The Rise And Fall of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars - David Bowie
Who's Next - The Who
Somewhere In The Between - Streetlight Manifesto
London Calling - The Clash

These aren't my favorite albums - these are albums I own that I think work extremely well as a whole. Like, I wouldn't call NMH my favorite band, but I would say that In The Aeroplane Over The Sea is, in my opinion, one of the finest albums ever recorded.

Likewise, TDS probably isn't my favorite NIN album (though I don't think I could pick one, actually), and DSotM isn't my favorite Floyd album (which would probably be Wish You Were Here), but those two work better as a cohesive whole than any other NIN or PF album

As for Radiohead, well, Kid A and OKC are both absolutely brilliant albums that work extremely well as a whole - I'd say Kid A works slightly better as an album, but no single song on Kid A beats out Paranoid Android or Exit Music (For A Film) (which is one of my favorite songs), except maybe Idioteque, so yeah.

Abbey Road is, in my opinion, the Beatles' finest work. The Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End trilogy is just sheer brilliance - again, some of my favorite songs ever.

Somewhere In The Between, Moving Pictures, Songs For The Deaf, Ziggy Stardust, and Who's Next are my favorite albums by their respective artists, so perhaps I'm a tad biased.

Edit: As for the five albums I enjoy the most, well, hrm... In no real order, I'd say...

Somewhere In The Between - Streetlight Manifesto
The Wall - Pink Floyd
The Fragile - Nine Inch Nails
In The Aeroplane Over The Sea - Neutral Milk Hotel
Love - The Beatles

SitB is the best album by my favorite band, so yeah. The Recieving End Of It All is another of my favorite songs. No band gets me as energetic as Streetlight does, so yeah.

The Wall is not my favorite Floyd album (again, WYWH), but I have the most fun listening to it - part of that is probably the whole "concept album" thing, but yeah. The same applies to The Fragile - though that was a difficult pick for me. I'd probably pick The Slip for my favorite NIN album, actually, I've just played it to death.

ITAOTS is, again, a masterpiece.

Love is a compilation album, but it's also a remix/mash-up album, and it's really fun to listen to.

This post is huge, so I'ma cut it off here.

I have to compliment you on your great taste in music, Therum. Your list made me want to put together a list of five concept albums I enjoy. In a concept album, a narrative theme is what appeals the most to me, so I tried to make a list where I like both the music and the story being told. I haven't listened to all of these recently, so maybe the stories aren't what I remember them to be, but the list should be something like this:

The Rise And Fall of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars - David Bowie
The Wall - Pink Floyd
Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots - The Flaming Lips
Joe's Garage - Frank Zappa
Queen II - Queen

No Metropolis by Dream Theater? Tsk tsk tsk. :P

Also... am I the only person in the world who thinks that Radiohead is horribly overrated and really not all that good?

Bamse - Thanks =D

I really like a good concept album. Knowing there's a story there, even if I can't quite decipher it, is always a lot more interesting than a regular album. I've expressed my love for Ziggy Stardust and The Wall. I've been intending to get into Zappa and The Flaming Lips for a while now and I just haven't gotten around to it yet - I also really like Queen, though I don't have any albums (don't know which one to start with =p).

Cris - You're definitely not the only person who thinks that way about Radiohead. They're a really hard band to get into. Thom Yorke's voice can be... grating (though I've grown to love it). On the other hand, all the other members of the band are excellent at the instruments they play, Thom and Johnny are excellent song writers, and Johny is an excellent composer... Iunno. I always recommend that those unfamiliar with the Radiohead catalog listen to Paranoid Android, Idioteque, and Street Spirit (Fade Out) - those aren't my favorite Radiohead songs (well, Idioteque is top three and Paranoid Android is top five), but they're all really good and show off the band's different styles really well.

And if you don't like those, then, well, Radiohead's not the band for you =p But yeah, again, I think they're absolutely brilliant.

As for Dream Theater, that's another band I've been meaning to get into for ages. So yeah.

Heh... I can manage a grating voice (I like Tom Waits, after all), but everything I've heard from Radiohead has just left me cold. I guess it's not so much that I hate them, as I can't understand why everybody seems to think they're the best thing since... well... whatever.

Also, if we're counting albums that share a theme but don't exactly tell a linear story (or mostly linear... The Wall's weird), I think Cyberpunk by Billy Idol deserves an honorable mention. With a broader definition, it's definitely a concept album, and shockingly good. Way ahead of its time.

Paranoid Android is definitely one of my favourite Radiohead songs, but I think as far as their albums go, as a cohesive whole, The Bends is superior. If you haven't listened to it yet Therum, I insist that you do. :)

I have more than five albums to recommend, but I'm kind of annoying in that sense, and as such I'll just list five off the apex of my cranium:

The Doors - Best of. (Preferably the fairly recent deluxe one, as it has more tracks. The more, the merrier as they say. But they have loads of greatest hits albums. If you want an original studio album by them, I say start at the beginning; the self-titled debut is wonderful) Morrison's voice is ever changing, from silky smooth to gravelly shouting. He, Manzarek, Krieger and Densmore are masters of their art.

Joseph Arthur - Come to Where I'm From. Frankly, I love this guy. I finally saw him live the other day (no small feat considering I live in ol' Blighty) and he blew me away. There's so much emotion in his songs. The most recent album is with a band named the Lonely Astronauts, and kind of lacks the rawness of the older ones. Also, try Redemption's Son; rather more soft, but it's the album that got me started.

Beck - Odelay. Okay, so generally speaking, most people would think of Odelay if you mention Beck to them, as well... it's his most well-known album. It's rather more accessible than the others, and sticks to a more mainstream genre. This does not make it 'better', just... a better beginning for someone yet to be versed. Beck tends to experiment a lot with his albums, so some might not be for you, but I'm loving this guy at the moment. Guero and Mellow Gold are also highly recommended.

Snow Patrol - Final Straw. A truly wonderful album. I'm not really sure what to say about this one, but I really do love it. Tugs at the heartstrings a tad at times, but this just increases the quality of the piece. The lead singer's hint of an Irish accent in his voice really adds to it too. The two earlier albums are much more uptempo, and the most recent is a bit heavier. The latter, Eyes Open, is great though.

Ian Dury and the Blockheads - Reasons to be Cheerful. Okay, so this is technically another greatest hits album, but has to be included as it includes some rather hard-to-find material from the late Dury, such as Spasticus Autisticus. Yes, I know what you're thinking of a song with a title like that, but don't. Admittedly, the song was banned here in the UK, but this was rescinded when the censors realised the song was a satirical take on how society treats people, and that Dury himself was crippled by polio. Very clever songs and very funny songs, Ian was a genius.

So there's my five. But my CD player has just switched discs and the debut album by Guillemots has started. Just rediscovered this and it is brilliant. Listen.

The Bends is great, but I just can't get into it as much as some of their other stuff. I enjoy it quite a bit, but it doesn't have the complexity of OK Computer or Kid A. I'd say it's on about the same level as In Rainbows, but In Rainbows has that almost... dreamy quality through the album that makes me love it so much more. So Iunno.

Looking through my library, though, I still need to give the edge to OK Computer. Paranoid Android is probably my third favorite Radiohead song (I said top five above, but I changed my mind (and Idioteque is second favorite, for the record)), and Exit Music (For A Film) is one of my favorite songs of all time, let alone my favorite Radiohead song.

Of course, I still haven't listened to Amnesiac or HttT yet, so I might like those a lot more than any of the albums I've got (haven't listened to Pablo Honey either, but I seriously doubt I'll like that one).

I bought Pablo Honey the other day actually, Therum, but haven't got round to listening to it yet. A friend has told me it's their best album, but I'm not inclined to believe her. The only two songs I know from it are Creep and You, but they're both pretty good.

As for Queens of the Stone Age... Rated R is their best album, with Songs for the Deaf coming in at a fairly close second.

Anyone who told you Pablo Honey is Radiohead's best album is just wrong. It's very straightforward - not as interesting as anything else Radiohead has done - and I've generally heard it's pretty bad except for Creep, which is a song I don't really like, so...
