IT IS SOOOOOOO SCREWED UP!

They nerfed EVERYTHING even worse than I was expecting... Sigh...

I had such high hopes too... It was the only thing that brought me back to KoL and now it just makes all my hopes crash and burn.

Please give me something to play KoL for. Surely there has to be *something* that NS13 was good for apart from adding 2 levels?

I'm sure there's a lot of good stuff there. I posted over on the KoL forums my theory, which I'll repeat here: It feels really painful right not because we're not just learning new stuff, we're un-learning old habits, and that's a very difficult and awkward thing to do. Habits take a long time to shake off.

I'm almost positive that given a week people will start to be more comfortable, and within a few weeks or a month most of us will be used to the new system, or at least understand it well enough to get by. I think what's so frustrating right now is that the limitations ("you can't do that as well as you used to") are obvious, while the benefits are still secret. And of course that's going to look bad. But once more of the benefits come into the light, it'll make more sense.

One of my friends told me that when you make potions, you make 3 instead of just one and without the skill that lets you have 10 turns per potion, you still get 10 turns!

I haven't had the chance to see what the potions are like *with* the skill, but I'm hoping I get 20. :)

But I think the biggest reason why I think this was rather... a strange update was because they nerfed ALL the styles of combat.

LTS
Stasis
...and even spellslinging!

The cap on the spell damage was just stupid. It kind of ruined it. But then again, plinking is still just as good a strategy...

I think it'll be pretty hard to unlearn all those old habits. Especially with ascension foods now put into level 9... I was hoping they'd have at least thought it was adequate to leave them at level 1. After all, that's the point of going on a specific path! To get a big boost on the next one. And to a lesser extent give yourself a challenge, although I don't really see the challenge in either Teet or Booze. Oxy is quite obviously one but not the other two.

But I don't think I'll be able to get used to it. Especially with the heavy lag.

And I have no idea why I'm typing this here instead of somewhere KoL related but I am because this is a slightly more cosy environment. :)

Hmm. Actually, I was thinking that it made a certain kind of sense for the spell damage to be capped, though I think +damage items ougt to be above and beyond the base. It's a way for the more powerful spells to be more compelling.

I do also personally feel that I'm about 0% likely to try a pathed hardcore run. I've done a bit of teet and one or two booze runs because I liked the simplicity of only looking for one type of fuel, but it was really almost entirely because I found the reward boost at the beginning of the next path a really good way to keep up momentum. I'm not saying they're wrong for making that choice, but I personally have lost most of the incentive to do one. I'll probably do oxy for the plexi (what I don't have already), but other than that I don't really see any appeal in what's now a very slight mid-game boost.

Still, for the most part it's too early and I'm too un-knowledgeable to make any real complaints (or all that many praises, other than having enjoyed the hell out of some new content and some new riddles--"happiness" is now my favorite weapon of all time, five times more than the next closest weapon).

That NS13 thing seems very interesting, there are numerous new components and mechanics. I know that many cried on the fact that speed gaming got hurt, but personaly I think it adds to the spirit of the game. (As Jick put it, it was not supposed uber speed runs to be possible)

I don't care about the speed game. I just care that my runs don't have too much excessive planning. Because now I have to plan when to eat my pates and when to drink whisky. It's slightly irritating how things have changed but some of it is awesome.

Oh, and this friend I mentioned has managed to convince me to start playing KoL again. :D

But I'm only starting after a week because (hopefully) the lag will have died down a little. And that's a big hopefully. I suppose I'll get used to the changes after a few weeks... I hope.

An interesting point about NS13, wether for good or for bad, is that it has taken an approach that involves two objectives:

Returning to the point where the game is about fun, and not wasting infinite hours contemplating about a single adventure,

and being more accurate as to the comunity standing. A familiar that costs 500.000, a bounty hunting game that can be a game by itself, and practicaly, one can play the game even without ascending, and still have a lot of fun.

Actually, I am considering this appoach, since I doubt the time I will have in the future to play the ascension game, but then again, winter will come again, and KoL time too :P.

There are, indeed, ways to get around the nerfs they put in. Sort of.

I'm not going to spoil any of them here, because I don't want them to get re-nerfed.

But really, NS13 has nerfed pretty much everything I found fun in the game. I guess I'm finding new ways to have fun (see above re: loophole). Although that's pretty much not a point, since finals are coming.

My only problem with NS13 is the limitations on items. Making all the keys quest items and leaving you with absolutely no worthwhile foods for the first few days of your run makes me very sad. But then again, this is also something than can easily be adjusted to. Oh, and I dread the thought of doing the level 11 quest every single run. :P

But NS13 also brought tons of awesome stuff. I absolutely LOVE the level 12 quest, and my favorite class (Pastamancer) has now become even more awesome. The Chefstaves are honestly the sexiest pieces of equipment ever, and they make spellslinging not only more feasible, but a very powerful strategy. (I was OHKOing level 12 enemies with Cone of Whatever!) Especially now that Eye of the Stoat has been nerfed...

All in all, NS13 was a fantastic rolling out of new content and rebalancing of game mechanics. And the stuff that seems awful right now will soon be not that bad. (Except for maybe the bounty hunter. A year of lucre hunting for a skill and a familiar? UGH.)

If you play for the pleasure of playing then it's okay for Jick to go and make everything the way it is. I love KoL and play it as often as possible. Jick could go ahead and make the level 3-10 quests as long and/or complicated as the level 11 and 12 quests and I would give him a round of applause. My only problem with that is that I would be level 6 by the time I finished the rat quest. I noticed that the level 11 quest starts off when I am level 11 and ends a quarter into twelve, which I find to be wonderful, so if the rat quest took long enough for a newbie to get to level 4 it would be fine.

Right now I'm gathering up the outfits for level 12, and I'm really, really dragging my feet because I want to get Wossname and I don't want to screw it up. For the last couple weeks, I haven't really played, and just gymmed my turns away -- was also going for another level 30 trophy and telescope, so it's not all pointless. But the longer I do that, the more I think "Do I really want to ascend and do it all again... again?"

If I ever do finish this run, I'm going straight into Bad Moon. And I'll level the holy $@!%#ing %@^# out of myself before I do any damn thing. So when I get to the annoying parts, I'll be able to hit things for 300 damage. That would make me feel better.

I suppose NS13 really seperated out the KoL player base. There are those who absolutely hate it, and those who really like it.

I fit mostly in the latter. No, dont' throw stones at me. >.<

I agree, frost_maze. I was always a pretty casual player (only ascended twice in two years of playing) and I really just enjoyed the huge amount of added content. No complaints here.

After that, I surmise that what Jick and co did was for the casual population of KoL: It made them happy but pissed off all those people who speed ascend and stuff.

Frost - Not the case with me. I was not a speed ascender.

Hence 'sweeping' generalisation.

There are those who are casual ascenders (me) but might also get pissed off by 'changed' mechanics, such as the absolutely nerfed spellslinging and all sorts of other stuff.

Well, I'm lazy. So I liked LTSynergy. Which they nerfed. Which made me angry. Cause it meant I had to actually try.

But I couldn't tell you exactly what made me drift away after NS13.

I still have lot's of mixed feelings about it. I liked the game, and I think I will like the extra quests more when I am done with my mission: to do one HC run of every type in every class (not booze or teet, but definitely Oxy). Until then, it is a little annoying because it is just making my HCO runs 10X longer... Wossname is good, though!
