Bongbob: I like the concept. Items which interact with or require other items seems like a good mechanic. I'd been thinking vaguely along those lines already for a couple of special cases, but it could be a good thing to do more expansively. I've been avoiding "outfits" in the KoL sense, but some item synergy would be good.

The orb/orb thing is witty, too. That's my kind of pun.

I think there should be a second picture in the fiendish pit to ease the monotony. Maybe the same photo, but reversed horizontally.

edit, much later: I also really want the ability to select no item in my combat item dialogue. I haven't used squidopus ink intentionally in days, but it still shows up on my Use Item input every combat, and occasionally I miscklick and use one. I only have one left now. Much like the KoL "-----------------" , it would make my life much easier to have some sort of null option to prevent accidental usages.

I'd like to second that request. I also did that several times in the beginning until I discovered the wonderful tab-enter combination.

Skills likewise, but less so. That's kinda tricky cause I like to use my skills sometimes.

Anyways, how about a zone of trolls from chat? We should have a wall of shame like thing and then have a zone that randomly picks a name from there would be funny. Especially if you included the mods and yourself as enemies. :D

I honestly think this is a hilarious idea.

This is something I've been wanting to post for a long time, so I'm doing it now. Please forgive me if I'm less than eloquent; I'm rather ill and haven't been able to sleep lately. :(

There is a serious problem with item progression right now, and that is that it's far too linear. There are very few situations where you have two items that are equally good but serve different purposes and you are forced to choose between them.

I will try to give an example. Note that these haven't gone through usual balance checks so the items might not be at all equal, but it's just an example and hopefully you'll be able to understand what I'm trying to convey.

===

double-edged sword

Melee weapon
Power: 200
Level Required: 15
Autosell value: 250

+10 Strength
-5 Hit
User takes 15% of weapon damage every attack.

---

infernium staff

Melee weapon
Power: 130
Level Required: 15
Autosell Value: 250

+10 Fire Damage
User loses 3 PP per attack.

---

suction-cup harpoon

Ranged weapon
Power: 100
Level Required: 15
Autosell Value: 250

User heals 10% of attack damage.
+10 maximum HP

---

grandfather clock

Melee weapon
Power: 100
Level Required: 15
Autosell Value: 250

-25 Strength
-3 PP from spell cost

===

Obviously I could keep going forever with this. They're probably not balanced the way I'd envision; Ryme, as the game designer, would be able to do that. But my point is still there, and it's that there needs to be items that are competitive with each other, in the sense that the user has to say, "These items are equally useful, but what are my priorities?"

I'd like to see some class-specific items, or at the very least items that clearly cater to a certain class (eg. +reflexes for Gadgeteers). I really do like the idea of limiting to class more though, because if someone of the wrong class picks it up, they can sell it and it will encourage more selling in the game. Obviously these items need to be uncommon or their value will quickly plummet.

I wasn't just referring to weapons, either; there is a general lack of variety in all item fields. We desperately need some new boots and helmets, for one thing.

I hope I was able to convey my point correctly, and I'd be happy to elaborate on any of the concepts I've presented.

Also Ryme, I've sent you a message in-game, so please see it. Thank you.

I think there should be a way to close one of your open auctions. It's sort of annoying when you list something by accident, or change your mind, but the only way to get it back is to buy it out, even if you don't have enough money.

Seriously a big ass closet like in KOL. My inventory is starting to pile up and I don't dare sell anything because who know how valuable it will become.

Indeed. Now can we see the same thing for "Use a Skill", please?

I think it was said somewhere else that this would allow for an "it's not selling for enough chips" cancellation.

If anything, a confirmation prompt would be better.

Actually, it should only allow auctions to be canceled when there are no bids yet. Since bids are being tracked now, that shouldn't be a problem.

Brick Wall
(Full Suit)
Power: 110
Brickwall is no longer jickable. That is to say, you can't throw Jick at it, because he's not here.

+10 initiative, +30 damage absorption

Made by assembling a lot of bricks found in downtown twilight, or where ever.

Coconut (As in Monty Python and the Holy Grail)
(Offhand item)
The coconut imbues you with the power to pretend you have a horse, and the ability to use it even though your other hand is being used.
-5 initiative, +Something I cant think of, possibly increasing range?

A few more ideas:

To scale the heights of bad taste:

The August of Guns:

Image

Ranged
Power: 100
+15 Power to Shirt
Pants cannot be worn

A seemingly ordinary Vickers World War I Machine gun, complete with magazines, flak helmet, and a miserable trench to sit in. On the plus side, you no longer have to wear pants standing in the trench!

Rubber Revolver:

Image

Power: 70
5% Resistence to Electrical damage
+5 Intellect

Holy Beatle Portmanteau! You don't know french [Or maybe you do], but this rubbery gunpiece isn't so useful for shooting, but looks like it'd hurt if you hit someone with it. The word play makes you feel more intelligent as well.

The Land of Irrational Numbers

This would be an area where the monsters names, levels, etc. are randomly generated numbers. Occasionally, the monsters may give you items and xp even if they win, because they're irrational. Non-combat adventures could include more irrationality. This place could be another city, or just one adventure location, or something!

One of the drops could be Pie, or Pi. There could be different kinds, including caffeinated pi.
~~~
I was reading the About section on the Quirkz website, and found an interesting idea! In your hideout, you could install a sink. There could be different kinds, but one could be a caffeinated sink, which lets you get caffeinated water. You might have to pay a monthly fee, or something.
Why do you bring Jick into TH? That would make TH even more closer to KoL. Wich is bad.
Well, it doesn't have to be anything like what I said. I was just thinking of a description for a brick wall, and that was the only thing that came to mind. Besides, how is it bad?
If you compare KoL with TH they dont have huge differences, and copying other games or putting the same content into causes the players to bore and copying exact games you get sued wich is not the case.
Besides we alredy have the point that TH makes funny comments and references wich KoL also does. Isnt this game suppoused to be serious? Thats what i thought . No offence Ryme 8)
Well, I personally think that this game is supposed to be fun, and funny. And if a description makes people laugh, then thats fine by me. And KoL does make lots of references to NetHack, and a lot of other things, too. Anyways, this is besides the point. This is a creative-ideas topic. Its Ryme's choice if he wants to put it in or not.
The game is funny and i have no problem with it but to me it makes no sense. A hero being funny? Arent heroes suppoused to be serious when fighting crime and all that? That's my point of view
Anyway, ive been thinking and im with you. I just thought about spiderman. Spiderman is a hero right? I saw the movies and he makes funny comments about who he fights. Also this brings the idea to my mind. Let us be able to make our custom avatars by designing our own super hero clothes :)
It's not like Ryme has been copypasting content from KoL or ever plans to. You don't have to reinvent the wheel to be original. I'll be quite happy to get a wheel from Ryme that's basically still a wheel, but a different one.
Why is it supposed to serious? What's wrong with funny? I doubt Ryme will ever rewrite the content to make the game serious and it's fine by me.
I said that was my point of view and if you read the post above you, you see i realized there was nothing wrong with it being funny.
I think if you thought TH wasn't ever trying to be funny, you've skipped a large portion of the text ...
While having a pinata in your inventory, and you use a baseball bat, it should drop candy. Or maybe you should have to wear something that covers your eyes.
I realize Braiton recapitulated on the no humor stance, but I figure I'll post my intended goal here anyway: Dramatic storytelling when it comes to advancing the plot, but with humorous filler in the rest. If a bad guy steals your pet dog, that's serious, and should be treated as such. But describing an otherwise uninteresting shirt, there might as well be some humor in it.
How about some christmas related material? E.g. some minor change in skills for ~christmas day:
Naturalists gain Summon Reindeer instead of water buffalo
Gadgeteers can improve their armor with layes of decorations (which would increase absorption)
Elementals can cast Snowball instead of Ice bolt
Psions gain Aura: Gift searching which makes them more curious and keen at looking around instead of Aura: Keen Observation.
That is actually one of my favorite things about the game, if not my favorite. A storyline in a game is generally a must for me, and humor is good as well. You mix the two flawlessly.
Well, some of the storyline isn't serious at all, as shown by Porcelain Bay and the Dank and Rusty Maze.
P.S. I like the dog idea!
I agree, it isn't always serious, but but even then, it carries itself well enough to fit into a sort of continuity.
