I get that the barcoded picture frame is kind of just a peen, but does it do nothing? I used mine, it told me I got it, showed me a picture of a bar code. I figured it would take the place of the gadgeteer gears but nothing, do avatars show up in a weird place? Is there a place I need to go to switch it?

Check your account settings. That's where avatars and other similar profile page items are controlled.
