Tabbed chat would be great, and a forced cls when switching between tabbed and non-tabbed is an insignificant price to pay for the option to have both.

How about putting each conversation in div with different z-levels. Give each new tab some offset from the top to make room for the player name. Whenever something is posted in a div that doesn't currently have the highest z-level, the background color changes, so that you'll know that someone posted there. This is possible with some object oriented javascript, pushing new conversations onto an array of objects containing not only a pointer to the div-node, but the info you need to channel outgoing posts to the right player or channel. This array could be held in another object with methods for sending z-levels and offsets to the div objects, so they can adjust when a conversation is closed. Adding new tabs will be trivial.

I just noticed the flashing ellipsis on the right of the channel list. Does it signify something or is it a decoration?

If it's 3 dots, that means it's loading from the server, if it's 2, that means it's done loading, but it's sticking the messages into the chat box.
Most people don't see the 2.
