Anyone know what happened? Seems awfully odd for the hosting company to just pull the rug out from under the site all of a sudden, let alone replace it with a redirect to some squatters' blog without warning.

Well... might be a bit premature, but I have gotten a basic wiki set up in an effort to recover, in case all the old data has been lost. It's extremely bare bones at the moment, (i.e., no real content, just category setups so far) but its at http://twilightheroes.scribblewiki.com/Main_Page

If this turns out to be a permanent outage of the old wiki, then I'll gladly turn over management of the new one to people who know more what they're doing than I - I can do the basics, but I'm certainly not a wiki expert by any stretch.

Hopefully the data hasn't been lost. Probably best to wait until the weekend is over, at the very least.

Today, I pretty much have a free day, I'm going to do my best to add all the information I possibly can to the wiki...Hopfully the old one comes back, but I wanna give us a head start on rebuilding if it doesn't.

Yeah. Not that I don't want to help, but I'm really not excited about recreating everything I worked on again.

Jack, I know what you mean. I'm not either, but if that's what's needed, that's what I'll do. I'll make a third account so I can get the questy stuff again, if needs be.

Don't suppose there's a way to save backups of the wiki? Just in case something like this happens again.

Yes, actually, there is a way to do backups, via the "Export pages" tool. You need a list of the page titles, but it's not difficult to do, really. They can be restored later (or to another site) via the "Import pages" tool.

I'm not certain, however, whether it's everything that gets exported, or just the text and formatting (i.e., images might still get lost)

I've got a lot of the exp/item/chip drops saved in text files, along with a lot of the one-time adventure text. Also Merit Badge stuff and level info for Psions and Naturalists, and exp levels up to 31.

But maybe we just used up the monthly allowance of bandwidth or something. I'm in no rush to put Humpty back together if what's going on is a mystery.

Yeah, but then we'd get some sort of message about the bandwidth limit being exceeded, instead of just this random switcheroo to another site.

Well, if anyone wants to sort through it, I copy/pasted a few of the text files I had handy.

Ok everybody I just want to set the record straight for once and for all. I am not an actual administrator for the wiki. Devant is the only actual admin with admin powers. The only thing I am is the unofficial head programmer. I do not know anything about how the wiki actually works. If I actually had admin powers I would have handed them off long ago to someone who is better than I at this kind of stuff.

I have some access codes to some things that devant sent me when I was uploading all the pictures. If anyone thinks they can actually do things with those please post your email address here and I will send it to you.

I am sorry about what happened to the wiki and I hope someone can get it back online as soon as possible.

Sporty, have you been able to reach Devant? I think he's been busy lately and may not have been around much, or even noticed the Wiki went down. I can try to reach him if you can't, as I'd like to let him continue to stay in charge if he's interested. But if he's completely out of touch or completely burnt out, it as a last resort it might make sense for anyone else who is interested to look into finding another place to host it and/or starting the wiki anew.

I just reached Devant and he has some good and bad news. I will start with the bad news. The wiki has lost hosting from byethost along with about 200,000 other sites. We will never get it back unfortuneately unless someone has backed the whole thing up. The good news is that Devant is doing well and will be coming back to TH in the future. At the current moment he is very busy with personal matters.

A new wiki has been put up by h3nry I believe.

Well, that sucks.

I don't know anything about writing for wikis, but I'd like to help with the rebuilding.

Anything idiot proof that I could do?

Hokay. Hmmmm. Can anyone re-do the way the old wiki's front page was formatted? With the tables for the games news and recent updates and such? I don't know how the formatting works.

I'd like to see that formatting back too, it was pretty nice. Unfortunately, I don't remember exactly what it looked like.

I'm already running one (smaller) wiki, and even that one I mostly babysit, since my game admin staff are old wikipedia warriors who know what they're doing a lot more than I most of the time. And since Ryme's expressed a preference as to who should run it (and since we'd be violating his copyrights if we didn't have his at least implied consent for a wiki, something Devant had but I don't necessarily do ;-)), might be cleaner to be ready for some kind of hand-off. I just want to make sure the hand-off is to the right receiver(s) here ;-) So, uh, if the people who were 'crats and stuff (if any) on the last Wiki want to get in contact with me, I'll get you set up with whatever administration tools you need.

And uh... yeah, backups. I think I'll make a set right now, just in case ;-)

Spending this morning doing massive categorizing and rearranging and templatzing to the scribble wiki.

If that one goes down, blood will be shed.

I know at least some of the information was backed up on this site. It is a shared wiki so it will not do for our permanent wiki but we can copy stuff off of it.

http://twilightheroes.bluwiki.com/go/Main

So if anyone who doesnt know how to program can go to pages on the above wiki. Just hit edit then copy everything and post it on the pages in the new wiki. It is a good start and its how I started to wiki program.

You've got to be kidding me. How can a host display that much incompetence? 200000 sites just nuked with no backups. What exactly happened over there? And why would they just replace these with a redirect to some typosquatting-esque blog?

I expected something along the lines of simply pulling the site without an explanation for exceeding bandwidth limits, but at least still having all the data. This? Unbelievable. What went down at Byethost?

I'm learnding!

I made my first couple of pages by adding in the robot hive (and the items associated with it). It's pretty easy once you get the hang of it.

...and apparently capitalization matters, because I recreated a couple pages that had already been created. Oops.

Perhaps ICANN lowered the banhammer on them?

I found this on my travels through the internet:

It'll be oldish, but possibly still useful.

I was using that list when I redid the items by ID pages for Wiki MK II... After a point, they were all off by 1. I forget where exactly.

Also, I'm not sure how much attention this will garner on it's own, so, a question.
